http://www.muralarts.org/ Mural Arts Program
The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program (MAP) started in 1984 as a component of the Anti-Graffiti Network (PAGN), a city-wide initiative to eradicate destructive graffiti and address neighborhood blight. As part of this effort, PAGN hired mural artist Jane Golden to reach out to graffiti writers and to redirect their energies to mural-making. Mural-making not only helped these young men and women develop their artistic skills, but also empowered them to beautify their neighborhoods. In 1996, the City of Philadelphia recognized MAP as a program distinct from the Anti-Graffiti Network. At the same time, MAP established a non profit organization, The Philadelphia Mural Arts Advocates. The Advocates have a broad mission of youth development and neighborhood revitalization through the arts. The Mural Arts Program has produced over 2,700 murals throughout Philadelphia--more murals than any other city in the world. These murals have become a cherished part of the civic landscape and a great source of pride and motivation to the millions of residents and visitors who encounter them each year. Currently, MAP is involved in mural-making and art education throughout the city of Philadelphia. MAP's art education programs target under-served youth at neighborhood sites throughout Philadelphia, both after-school and during the summer. Art education classes use mural-making to teach art, promote self-confidence, and foster life and job skills. With professional artists serving as educators and role models, MAP's art education programs serve more than 3,000 youth each year. Art education classes are offered at no fee, ensuring accessibility for all youth.

http://www.wpamurals.com/ New Deal/WPA Art Project
On May 6, 1935, the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) was created to help provide economic relief to the citizens of the United States who were suffering through the Great Depression. The artistic community had already become inspired during the 1920s and '30s by the revitalization of the Italian Renaissance fresco style by the inspired creations of Mexican muralists Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueriros. Certain visionary U.S. politicians decided to combine the creativity of the new art movements with the values of the American people. The Federal Art Project was one of the divisions of the W.P.A. created under Federal Project One. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had made several attempts prior to the F.A.P. to provide employment for artists on relief, namely the Public Works of Art Project (P.W.A.P.) which operated from 1933 to 1934 and the Treasury Department Section of Painting and Sculpture which was created in 1934 after the demise of the P.W.A.P. However, it was the F.A.P. which provided the widest reach, creating over 5,000 jobs for artists and producing over 225,000 works of art for the American people. It is this legacy of the thousands of workers who labored at their craft for little money but great pride which we have to inspire us today. Although many of these works of art have been destroyed or stolen, those that remain must be preserved. They stand as a reminder of a time in our country’s history when dreams were not allowed to be destroyed by economic disaster.

http://dolphin.upenn.edu/~davidtoc/murals/murals.html Murals in Philadelphia
I created this page because I am a strong believer in making art accessible to as many people as possible. I have long admired the mural artform, especially when created by non-professional artists. I strongly encourage everyone to go and see these murals for themselves, because these digitized photographs cannot possibly do them justice. I have gazillions of photographs of murals in Philly, and I can't possibly put them all up on the web. If there is a specific mural you are looking for a photo of, let me know and I'll send it to you if I have it. I am always looking for more murals. If you know of ANY in Philadelphia that do not already appear on this page, PLEASE let me know.
